Level Up! The Musical

by Lucy Watson & Julian Kirk

Level Up! is a musical comedy developed in Bristol by a team of South-West based creatives.  It’s already had its first fifteen minutes of showtime at the Bristol Old Vic New Writing Festival in June 2024, and subsequently received R&D funding to develop the script and songbook.  It has now been through the R&D process, and is debuting at Gilded Balloon, at the Edinburgh Fringe 2025!

When best mates Jo, Bobby and Raff are accidentally uploaded into a glittering game world, they're suddenly playing against each other, to WIN!. Jo wants tokens, Raff tries to save the world and Bobby just wants to know if the game is even real.

Fast, funny, and uncomfortably current, Level Up! the Musical explores ambition, digital delusion, and the crazy ways we measure success - tackling everything from crypto currencies to carbon credits and existential burnout.

With a game-inspired video wall and an all-singing, all dancing cast, Level Up! asks: if life is a game, how do we win - and who makes the rules?

This is a show for musical lovers, gamers and anyone still wondering if we're living in the Matrix: think Jumanji meets Inside No. 9 with a chip-tune soundtrack and jazz hands!

Featuring a dazzling mix of retro-futuristic beats, old-school swing, and 8-bit gaming melodies, Level Up! playfully satirizes the blurred lines between virtual and real worlds. With its comically chaotic cutscene chorus, relatable characters, and irresistibly catchy songs, this musical has something for everyone!
